Claire’s Life: Meeting South African TV Star Boity Thulo in a Dez Deme Printed Emma Dress

Yesterday I interviewed with South African socialite and superstar Boity Thulo for her eponymous show.
Boity is the TV host of MTV’s Ridiculousness Africa and ETV’s music show Club 808. She has the second highest social media following in South Africa at 1.2 million followers (!) and was in New York City for the MTV Awards. To put it bluntly, she’s bomb and effortlessly beautiful!

Of course, during our chat, I gave her viewers a bit of background on me, and then Boity and I began to talk about a few issues that hit close to home. When I told her that I initially started Fashion Bomb Daily to respond to the lack of diversity in traditional media, she revealed to me that magazines in South Africa have similar diversity issues, even though people of color comprise the majority of the population! She also revealed that some schools in Jo’Burg have been telling young black girls that they can’t wear their hair in locs, braids, Afros or more natural styles. I was honestly shocked at first to hear that South Africa experienced race issues similar to America before I remembered their history of apartheid.

At any rate, it just revealed to me how important it is for us to continue to build a community of people who appreciate all the poppin melanin, curves, and coifs we have to offer. From America to Africa, we outchea!!
And I can’t wait to go to South Africa, back to Lagos, to Kenya, Congo, Senegal…
