Murphy’s Law: 5 Tips for Preparing for Business Travel Trips (When Everything Seems to Go Wrong)

I type this as I sit in Washington Reagan airport after a day full of delays, weather woes, and gross inconveniences.

Due to severe storms, flights yesterday were delayed or completely canceled (like mine), leaving me to scramble to make it to panels, and now Cocktails with Claire.

GOD is good, and I skidded into D.C. just in time to make the event, and GOD willing, I will make it to Chicago today! But I began to think about best practices when it comes to travel, especially if you are traveling to fulfill a business obligation.
Read on more for my thoughts:
1. Arrive the night before

Twice in recent history, I’ve been scheduled to arrive in the morning or early afternoon for an evening event, but had to delay or miss the event because of flight issues beyond my control. If you plan to be in the city prior, you can arrive at a leisurely pace, get settled, and get some rest before you have to be ‘on.’ If you can, come in early and just relax…!

2. Pack Your Outfit in Your Carry On:

Major Key alert!!! This might be the most important tip! If you check bags and your flight is canceled, there is a strong chance you might not see your stuff as soon as you touch down. I’m dealing with that right now! I checked two bags with American Airlines, and only one arrived in Washington. Thankfully everything I need, from my event outfits to my makeup and toiletries, are in my carry on. I also learned this in Nigeria. Keep your essentials right next to you so you aren’t completely out of luck should you not arrive with your ‘load.’

3. Get your makeup done the day before.

This is controversial, as most people will tell you NOT to sleep in your makeup. Confession: I do it all the time, sometimes out of laziness, sometimes because if you add a bit of powder, you can keep your face beat for two days in a row! When I was rushing to get to D.C. and only had 30 minutes to get ready, I lowkey wished I had kept my face on from the night before. If it comes down to it, arrive ready so that you can get to work.

4. Protect Yourself; Make Sure All Your Contracts Protect you From Acts of GOD or Weather; Get Event Insurance.

Luckily the one client whose event I missed didn’t take me to the cleaners for not fulfilling my obligation! That said, things happen. Make sure that whatever contract you sign includes the possibility of you not being able to make it because of circumstances beyond your control. Also, get event insurance. It’s affordable and can help recoup your losses should you need it.

5. Be Nice and Keep Calm.

At the end of the day, the world will not explode if you don’t make your event. People are understanding. Think of the Serenity Prayer, “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” It’s not the attendant’s fault your flight was canceled or that the dumb airline lost your bag. So even though you’re frustrated, don’t take it out on them! And you never know–you can make new friends. Also, you never know who might follow your website *ahem*, and people talk. So keep it cute!

Anyway, I’m off to catch my flight (we just boarded *does a praise dance*).
Do you guys have any tips to add?
