The Bomb Movie Review: Top Five

On this blog, I’m exploring so many topics, from fashion to food to films!
Last night, I was treated to a screening of Chris Rock’s new movie, Top Five.

Co-produced by Jay Z, Questlove, and Kanye West (snaps), the movie follows Chris Rock aka Andre Allen, a comedian whose issues with alcoholism have had an adverse effect upon his career. The long and short of it: He doesn’t feel funny without the booze, and has decided to go the ‘serious’ route with a poorly received film about the Haitian revolution. New York Times writer Chelsea (played by Rosario Dawson) follows him around for a profile piece, peppering him with probing questions as he goes on press junkets, visits family, and ultimately regains his confidence as a performer.

Though the subject matter seems serious, it’s laced with laughs (how could it not with Chris Rock at the helm?). Appearances by Adam Sandler, Whoopi Goldberg, Jerry Seinfeld, Cedric the Entertainer, Tracy Morgan, and DMX (!) insure a howling good time.

A subplot featuring Gabrielle Union as a Bravo-lebrity inspired reality TV star shines a light on society’s obsessions with the superficial; the love story in the end makes this heart warmingly electric.

Top Five is in theaters December 12th! It’s definitely worth checking out.
