The Bomb Life 101: On Being Disciplined with Friends

Not sure if you’ve noticed, but I’ve been in focus mode! I’ve been a ‘blogger’ for 10 years, and I don’t want to be doing the same thing 10 years from now. So I’m switching it up, writing a book, trying to wake up at 5am, and going for my goals!
I’ve basically decided to go ‘underground’ for the next year, so sat down with one of my besties to tell her that I wouldn’t be as available to hang out. She laughed and said I didn’t hang out with her that much anyway! She acted like she understood, but I really don’t think she did.

Weeks would wane on. She’d call me during the day, asking, “What are you doing?” and get frustrated when I said, “I’m working.” During days off from work, she’d want to go to the spa, grab cocktails, go for excursions, to which I replied, “I don’t think you understand. I’m working.”

Yesterday, while getting fitted for my dress for the Keep a Child Alive Ball (I’m the official red carpet correspondent!), she called and asked me what I was doing, and I told her that I was busy. She said, “Someone told me that when you make it big, we won’t be friends anymore.” I’m a loyal friend and take my friendships seriously, so felt tremendous guilt! So even though I wanted to put the finishing touches on the final chapter of my book and get a good night’s sleep, I decided to hit the rooftop and grab a few drinks and appetizers.

Today is super busy. I have hair appointments, nail appointments, and to get fitted for my dress before hitting the carpet. BUT I didn’t even want to get out of bed because I was so tired! I’m still tired! And though I was frustrated with my friend, I should’ve been mad at myself because I didn’t have the discipline to tell her NO.

I think my friend is one of my biggest supporters! She’s not a bad person. But as you grow, change, and start to want and do new things, you have to be disciplined. And you have to be OK sitting out certain situations and not feeling bad about it.

Of course make time for important moments. If it’s a birthday, wedding, christening, or holiday, I’m in there like swimwear! Everything else can wait. If you want big things, you sometimes have to sacrifice those rooftop drinks so you can have a clear mind to get to work!
