So yesterday, I was internet shamed because of my choice of attire for the Millions March in New York.
I’ll be honest: I got gussied up to attend other events in the city, and was in the middle of shooting a Style Diary…
…when I heard the march was nearby. I instantly felt compelled to skip my events, join in, and lend my support. In heels.
A lot of people were more concerned about my comfort than I was. Was I cold? Actually, no. It was about 40-45 degrees, and my sweatshirt was quite warm (I think it’s lined in fleece)! Did my feet hurt? Not really. This is probably a great selling point for my Gianvito Rossi leather and perspex heels. I managed to walk at least 20 blocks in them without limping. Yes, my bunion is killing me today, but when the spirit moves you, you move!
At the end of the day, regardless of what I wore or what people thought I was doing out there, I hope people are encouraged and inspired by the amazing pictures Karl Pierre captured (see them here). Though I wasn’t really focused on what others were wearing or the general make up of the crowd, I was touched to look at the pictures afterwards and see that black people aren’t the only ones who get that #BlackLivesMatter. Saying #BlackLivesMatter doesn’t mean that other lives don’t. The phrase just means that we need to start honoring, valuing, and uplifting black people and black lives instead of recklessly shooting or tearing them down.
Just a thought.
