In this edition of Ask Claire, we have Marsha, who types, “How do you manage work-life balance as an entrepreneur?”
I truly thought about this question as I was sunning by the pool in Trinidad and Tobago, and the simple answer is: work for me is play.
Though Trinidad was a work trip, I had the benefit of experiencing a foreign country and meeting amazing new people.
I also had the wonderful option of blogging while poolside.
I’ll admit: sometimes I was resentful of my Macbook as I watched others splash around and lime it up. But if I had to choose between typing while basking in the sun vs. typing in a cubicle, I choose option A.
Sometimes friends, like parents, just don’t understand. While I was in Trinidad for 10 days, I missed a girl’s trip to Miami and another friend’s toddler’s birthday party. It sucks big time to miss out on things going on back home, but such is the sacrifice of any hardworking entrepreneur. And the goal for me is to put a time limit to what I’m doing, then switch gears so that I can be more present. At year 10 of blogging, I’m definitely going to move onto something else, that will hopefully be less time consuming!
In sum, there are some sacrifices to be made when you’re building your brand, but it helps soften the blow if the work you do is so enjoyable that you forget you’re working!
Fellow Entrepreneurs, what do you think?
