If Something Scares You: Do It Anyway; Reflections from the Embrace Your Call Conference Wearing a Michael Skirt by Dez Deme

A few weeks ago, I was asked to give a 30 minute speech on embracing my call in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

It seemed like a daunting task. How could I talk for so long? But I accepted the challenge.
My speech centered on how I started from the bottom. How I heard “NO” time after time when I first started my career, but decided to create my own opportunities and go for it anyway.

Not only was it wonderful to walk down memory lane, but the crowd of mostly women were so engaged and supportive. People wanted to hear my story and see how I went from wearing Bronx Heels that broke while walking on 5th Avenue to being an ambassador for multiple brands, including a private jet company!

Sometimes you forget how far you’ve come and how long it took to get there! But speaking about my journey ignited a fire in me that was electric and extended to the audience. Everyone seemed to really love it!

Whenever something scares you, think of the worst case scenario. For me, the worst case scenario in a public speaking situation would be stuttering or stumbling over my words (or going off on a tangent). But you know how you avoid worst case scenarios? Prepare.

I go to an acting coach who helps me organize my thoughts and gives me tips. I also practice. I practiced in the shower. I even gave the speech to my makeup artist that morning (and she actually had some great insight that I ultimately used in my speech).

All that to say: push yourself outside of your comfort zone. Things that seem insurmountable are actually very doable. And once you do one thing, it gives you the confidence to do other things without fear.

Someone asked me, “How do you have the courage to walk up to celebrities?” And it was hard to even think about it because I do it so naturally, but I always just remember that people are people. And if you approach anyone or any situation with good intentions and love, you can never lose.

*I’m on a writing spree today! But it should prepare me to write my book. Yes, I’m writing a book. I hope you all buy it. It will be available by Christmas. I’m trying to write it in a week. Crazy? Perhaps. But with the amount I write anyway, it might be a breeze…
