Remembering Mychael Knight: May He Rest in Peace

It was with great shock and sadness I received the news that designer Mychael Knight died today at the young age of 39. He passed away peacefully at 7:25am, just outside of Atlanta, Georgia.

Mychael was a beautiful soul, who had a somewhat bashful smile that could light up your heart. Though he was tremendously talented, gaining 4th place in Season 3 of Project Runway, he was extremely humble, almost as if he were unaware of just how gifted he was.

I remember meeting him for the first time, and fan girling a bit over him. He was giving and generous to me, furnishing me with two beautiful gowns, and asking for little in return. I actually wore one of his dresses again not too long ago, and told myself I’d get back in touch with him to order a few more pieces. I had no idea he was sick. I had no idea what pain could have ever been in his mind or body. I took his presence and his gift for granted, and now I’m wishing I could have made that one phone call, maybe dropped him a note of encouragement, just done something to show him just how valuable he was to me, the fashion community, and the world.

Every time I’m met with the untimely death of a colleague, I can only think of the fickle nature of life. Tomorrow is not guaranteed, so if you want something, start today. Don’t put off for tomorrow what you can do right now.

Also, tell people you love and appreciate them, honor and value them while they’re still here. Mychael had invited me to his show this season, and for whatever reason I couldn’t make it. I figured, “I’ll go next season.” You can’t bank on the future, live in the now and live life to the fullest.

Mychael, I pray that you rest in sublime peace.
Love & Light,
