Oh Boy!
Last night was a first for me: I hosted an intimate screening for OWN’s new docu-series called Love In The City. My duties were to give a welcome speech and then moderate a Q&A afterwards.
I am not a public speaker. On my junior high report cards, my teachers would always call me a “quiet leader,” a euphemism for someone who says absolutely nothing in class, asks zero questions, provides zero answers, but somehow manages to Ace the tests! My mother, who was a teacher herself, used to be baffled by my introversion, saying, “I don’t have any students who are so shy.” All this context to say that talking in front of large groups is so not my forté, but I’m learning to step out of my comfort zone!
Right before I left for the event, I read a comment on FBD from someone saying I should get a video correspondent for Fashion Bomb TV, because I guess my latest performance was that bad. But I shook off the negativity and went for it–and I think the night went really well (mainly due to the room being filled with all of my friends and colleagues)!
Let me be an example: embrace your fears. You can excel in something that doesn’t come naturally to you if you just keep doing it. Practice makes perfect!
Anyway, back to the night! It was fun. Though the show is all about the love lives and relationships of Kiyah Wright, Bershan Shaw, Tiffany Jones, and Chenoa Maxwell, all the ladies are really into fashion as well (which is why I was asked to host).
For the occasion, I opted for a Sex and the City inspired look in a Mirror Embellished ‘Oh Boy’ sweatshirt by Markus Lupfer and a faux ostrich feather skirt by Robert Rodriguez.
I completed with Stuart Weitzman Nudist Sandals and an American Apparel bow headband.
I’ve definitely played with the idea of being on TV, and I think situations like these are probably training me for something bigger. Can’t wait to see what it could be:)
