The Truth About Being a CEO on Vacation: 5 Things Every Entrepreneur Must Know If They Want to Take a Break

Happy Wednesday!

I am currently in the beautiful Bahamas, lapping up the sun and sand in a beautiful tree lined enclave. While I have been posting from here on my Instagram @ClaireSulmers, here’s the first thing you should know about being a CEO on Vacation:

  1. No One Cares

That’s right. Customers waiting on merchandise don’t care that you need a mental break. Advertisers still want their ad posted. There is a phrase that to whom much is given much is required, and that rings resoundingly true when you attempt to make time for yourself. If you have the privilege of working for yourself and taking time off, you must know that your business demands your attention. That said, you won’t grow to resent your position if you have a great team. Which brings me to…

2. Learn to Delegate

Just this past Monday, on day 1 of my vacay, one of my team members called out, and I had to take a break from rocking in a hammock to cover her shift. While I wasn’t so thrilled that she took off with basically no warning, it did warm my heart that so many other members of my staff offered to pitch in. The way you can truly take a break is if you have people you trust to steer the ship while you’re gone. Now that I know that there are many team members who are open to learning new roles, I’ll focus on training them once I get back.

3. Set Boundaries

Today I did a Tik Tok (I am committed to learning!) and a photo shoot for FashionBombDailyShop.com. All work, but fun work! In the midst of all that, I tanned and swam. But I told myself that I would check emails at certain hours: 9am, noon, and 3pm, then hands off! I was asked at the last minute to do a Zoom meeting, and I declined. It’s important to set boundaries, no matter how committed you are to success. Humans need to relax and refresh for their mental health–that includes you.

4. It will Get Better with Time

I remember being in the Bahamas a few years ago (my mother is from here) and receiving back to back text messages from stylists, advertisers, the list goes on (read my posts + tips about it here). Back then I didn’t have nearly as many team members as I have now. The quality of your vacation is directly related to the quality of your team. If you have a well trained staff with back ups for each member in place, you should have no problem kicking back and enjoying.

5. Working Constantly Isn’t So Bad if You Enjoy It

I took a little break from being eaten alive by mosquitos to write this. I enjoy writing. I enjoy taking pictures of items from FashionBombDailyShop.com in beautiful locales. It really would be insane to complain about the Bomb Life, so I don’t and I won’t.

BUT if you are an entrepreneur, I hope you’re ready to work, work, work (almost) non stop. You can get a few hours by the pool, though. And I’d highly recommend sleeping in.

Who really needs more than that?

Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop.
