Shopping in Australia: 5 Must Stop Sydney Shops
By Claire

Wherever I go, whether for business or pleasure, I have to take a bit of time out to discover the hot places to shop.
I found five fun gems when I recently popped by Sydney, Australia for the holidays.

My favorites:
1. Capital L

Address: 100 Oxford Street, Paddington 2021

Why you should go: I had a time finding flagship stores for Australian brands like Bec & Bridge or Lover. I found most of what I wanted and needed at Capital L! I scored a We are Handsome swimsuit, spied tons of pieces by Nicholas, and bonus: they had a great sale + my size.

2. David Jones

Address: 86 -108 Castlereagh Street, Sydney, NSW 2000.

Why you should go: Need all your designer garments under one roof? David Jones is the place to go. While there, I spied Austalian mainstays Bianca Spender, Camilla and Marc, Johs Goot, and Willow, along with international names like Mary Katrantzou and Lanvin. The department store gave me a Macy’s feel with a Saks stock. Basically, it was relaxed, cool, full of tourists, yet design conscious, so feel free to browse at your leisure.

3. The Strand Arcade

Address: 412-414 George St, Sydney NSW 2000, Australia

Why You Should Check it Out: I gave myself two days to shop in Sydney, and on one day, I was pressed to find a Dion Lee store or dress. My search brought me to the Strand Arcade. Unfortunately the Dion Lee store hadn’t opened as yet, but I did find other gems, including stores like Lover, The Corner Shop (which carries 3.1 Phillip Lim, Isabel Marant, Kenzo, and more), and Sass & Bide. I didn’t spend a ton of time there, but from what I could see, it’s definitely worth a pause.

4. Désordre
Desordre darlinghurst
Address: 323 S Dowling St, Darlinghurst NSW 2010, Australia

Why You Should Check it Out: My search for Dion Lee led me here, too (long story short, I ordered a NYE outfit from Ssense that still hasn’t been delivered (another story in itself), so I launched an unfruitful search for Dion Lee in Sydney. It’s actually easier to just order most things online–Shopbop and Matches have more Dion Lee garments in my size than the whole city of Sydney! Sydney is unlike New York in that way; you can’t find the flagship stores anywhere! But if you’re looking to stumble across random gems, Sydney has got you covered). At any rate, where was I? Ah yes, Desordre. They had the largest stock of Dion Lee in the city, but everything was SUPER TINY. The shop owner told me it was because they have to pre-order items because they’re so expensive; and most Australian girls aren’t busty like me! At any rate, I emerged empty handed from Désordre, but I could tell it’s worth checking out. Note: didn’t see any sales here comparable to what was online. Be ready to spend!

5. Toi et Moi Sydney

Address: 116 Oxford St Paddington.

Why You Should Check it Out: This is probably the most affordable shop out of the bunch. It stocked a lot of cheap and cheerful separates, perfect to scoop up on a short vacay. I got a cute printed combo from them. Stay tuned for pictures!

Things to know: you can find most shops like Acne, Zimmermann, Josh Goot, and a slew of Australian brands by Paddington (extending from Oxford Street, Paddington is home to the highest concentration of premiere fashion boutiques, design stores, antique shops, bookstores, and restaurants). Though the conversion rate does work in our favor (for the moment), things can get pricey! I spied $500 shorts at Ellery, and $1,000 garments (no sale) at places like Désordre and Josh Goot.

Lastly, though I did find a few things in my size, I generally found in difficult to find larges or size AUS 12 or 14 (my sizes). Though Capital L did have quite a large selection, so was pleased…and that’s why I ranked them #1!
At any rate, Sydney natives–have anything to add?
*Like items in the collage? They’re by Australian designers.

The corner shop, incu, blood orange, for artists only, tuchuzy, estate of mind, dealopes, and basically the entire intersection at glenmore rd paddington. General pants is a great fast fashion chain too. And online there is MarketHQ for fast fashion, and mychameleon is great for high end.
