Claire’s Life: Meeting Gayle King and Adam Glassman at a Pandora Event + Don’t be Afraid to Say Hi

Hello Lovelies!
Happy Monday!
I am currently in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Why? It’s one of my bestie’s birthdays, and she is a student at Wake Forest. I normally miss her birthday because I’m in Milan for Fashion Week, but this year, I decided to take a break and just go somewhere nice and quiet where I can get work done. Writing a book is not easy, and a holiday deadline is killer!! So I’m currently typing away in a quiet hovel.

Late last week, I met Adam Glassman and said hello to Gayle King at an event for Pandora Jewelry.

I’ve done work with Pandora before, so wanted to reconnect with the team! And it’s always great to meet accomplished people who have played key roles in the publishing industry.

Adam Glassman has been the Creative Director of Oprah Magazine since its inception, and styles Oprah for all of her covers (read more about him here). It’s pretty accurate to call him the King of Oprah Magazine.

Of course we are familiar with Gayle King, who, more than being Oprah’s bestie, is a co-anchor of CBS This Morning and an editor-at-large for O, The Oprah Magazine.

Moment of honesty: when I went to the event, I saw Gayle and Adam and I was totally intimidated! They didn’t have security around them, but were kind of off to the side, doing their thing. And there were TV cameras! Even though most people in the room had undoubtedly come to see them, most were on the other side of the room, clinging to the bar for dear life.

I always reason that I’d be disappointed in myself if I didn’t try. I came to the event to see them. I didn’t come there to drink wine and eat delicious hors d’oeuvres!

So I walked up, and they were super nice. Most successful people are. Turns out, Adam is familiar with Fashion Bomb Daily, and asked me a few questions about me and the site before taking a pic.

I’ve met Gayle a couple times before (the first time we met, she asked me for a business card and I didn’t have one). This time she remembered me:) Yes, to her Roksanda dress and Sarah Jessica Parker two toned pumps!

Moral of the story is: just say hi. Even though people are accomplished, powerful, and influential, at the end of the day, they are people. It’s helpful if you are familiar with who they are and what they’ve done. It’s extra helpful if you have something to say. But usually an introduction and a ‘How are You?’ do the trick.

Also, practice makes perfect. I have walked up to Anna Wintour and given her my card (I only did that once, now I cower in terror. But she was nice!). I walked up to Carine Roitfeld. I’ve even snapped a selfie Oprah.

I always think: You Have Nothing to Lose. And you never know what connections you can make by pushing yourself a little bit outside of your comfort zone.

Anyway, I’m super focused on writing this book! 3 chapters down, 8 to go. Lord, this is a struggle, but thankfully, I like to write!

** There comes a time, however, when pictures become passé i.e. you’ve met the person so many times that you can get past the picture taking and start to form a real relationship. Everything in time.
