Claire’s Life: Bevelations with Bevy Smith Wearing a Nicole Shante Black Dress and Azzedine Alaia Sandals + What We Could All Learn from Bevy Smith

A few days ago, I was honored to appear on Bevy Smith’s Sirius XM show, Bevelations.

A lot of you might know Bevy from Bravo’s Fashion Queens, but I came up in the industry knowing her as one of the most connected, most beloved fixtures in media, fashion, and entertainment.

I remember I first met her back in 2005. I literally harassed her to meet with me (I e-mailed her several times, and pulled every card out of my hat i.e. referenced by so and so before I got an answer). The lesson here, folks: be persistent and consistent! Our first meeting was at the swanky Lure Fishbar (she fit me in before a meeting she had with the then PR director of Karl Lagerfeld). I remember her giving me tips on how to stand out in the industry. And she’s continued to do that over the years–she’s one of the many women I’ve interacted with along my journey who has always offered nuggets of advice and pearls of wisdom.

A couple things I can say about the industry: 1. It’s small. 2. People move around and around, up, down, and sideways. Always look at your journey and your career as a long one. Be good to people and always be respectful. You never know what rooms you can glide in to.

Bevy Smith’s career is proof of the pudding. She started off at Rolling Stone Magazine, then went on to Vibe. She held fabulous dinners with her Dinners with Bevy series, twirled on TV with Bravo, and now has her own radio show and is on Page Six TV. She has been able to survive and thrive in a notoriously fickle industry off the strength of her smarts, savvy, and winning personality. Suffice it to say we could all learn a thing or three from Ms. Bevy!

For the day, I kept it simple in a Nicole Shante dress and Azzedine Alaia sandals.
