Bomb Book: Ty Alexander’s Things I Wish I Knew Before My Mom Died

My birthday was turned all the way up, so I decided to cool it all the way down this weekend. For me, it was all about getting my house in order…catching up on expenses, cleaning, working out, popping by art exhibits, and getting in some good reading! I received Ty Alexander’s book “Things I Wish I Knew Before My Mom Died” in the mail, and decided to indulge while burning my new BOMB Figue 15 candle (more on that later).

I’ll admit: the title threw me off a bit at first. I thought to myself: By the grace of GOD, my mom is still here…so this book doesn’t pertain to me!

But after digging in, I realized that the book, in addition to being a vulnerable memoir, is moreso about cherishing those moments we have with the ones we love. Don’t take the people in your life for granted because one day they may abruptly be taken away.

I’ll admit that I’ve been a bit of a brat lately. I was 100% over Thanksgiving, and complained to my friends for most of Christmas, wishing I was in St. Bart’s instead of overhearing my mom and brother squabble on a road trip down to New Jersey.

My brother sent an email not too long after Christmas, suggesting we take a family trip in 2017, and I ignored it! Moms mean well, lord knows they do. But my mom loves to scream my name “CLAYAH!,” wake me up early (as she did today), and talk nonstop. Sometimes I’m over it!! I’m sorry!! But after reading Ty’s book, I finally hit reply all to my brother’s email, and my mom called today to start planning our family vacay to Thailand and Japan.

Yes the glamorous life always beckons and I can’t wait to begin new traditions with my boo and family. And who knows? I’m sure my mom would be down for St. Bart’s next year!

But really Ty’s book taught me to cherish my mom. Call her. Listen to her voice. Because as Chapter 1 states, the end is inevitable. Spend time now and lap up all those good memories. Tell her you love her. Listen to her talk about her pottery for hours (my mom has a lot of pottery, coming soon to FashionBombDailyShop.com–this is not a plug, just a reality!). Smile through your teeth as she shouts your name at 9am and tells you to clean dishes. Love on her now because tomorrow is not promised.
